Yes, Kirby is my real given name. When I was born, my mom suggested the name “Kirby” and my dad remarked “I never met a Kirby who wasn’t a hellion” and so it was decided. I come from a long line of makers and learned fundamental sewing skills from my mother but am mostly self-taught. In my younger days, my motivation to sew was to achieve the punk rock aesthetic and make outdoor gear I couldn’t afford. While working at a fabric store in Salt Lake City, I befriended its frequent customers who were also local drag performers and then began creating for the drag community. From there, I developed the skills that led me into technical design. Garment engineering and construction, pattern creation and corrections, and fit remediation truly are my passion and talent.
I grew up in Colorado and Utah with constant camping and nature-based activities. Appreciation for the outdoors is deeply engrained in my value system and lifestyle. It was my love for the western mountain ranges I grew up on that inspired me to achieve my B.S. of Geoscience at the University of Utah. While this degree may not seem applicable to apparel engineering, I rely heavily on the trigonometry and the ability to envision 2D to 3D that I learned in college.
